The Opera Under the Stars event on June 29 and 30 drew large audiences. The opening event on June 29 also marked the official launch of a new festival site — LeBreton Flats Park, which was inaugurated by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada. The event was just one of many taking place throughout the year to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Ottawa’s selection as the capital. |

This grand event will feature renowned conductor Richard Bradshaw, leading two free evenings of opera highlights, with internationally acclaimed Canadian artists, the Canadian Opera Company (COC) Orchestra and the Opera Lyra Ottawa Chorus. The Opera Under the Stars concerts at LeBreton Flats Park will mark the COC’s return to Canada’s Capital Region after 29 years, and will be one of the key events commemorating the 150th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s choice of Ottawa as the Capital. The concerts also provide an excellent lead-up to the Canada Day celebrations.

This year, the COC’s recording Mozart: Arie e Duetti won the 2007 Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral Performance. The album features Isabel Bayrakdarian, Michael Schade and Russell Braun, with Richard Bradshaw conducting the COC Orchestra.

Opera Lyra Ottawa
Opera Lyra Ottawa is one of the largest independent arts organizations in the Canada’s Capital Region. The company dared to be Ottawa's first professional opera company in 1984. Now, 23 years after staging its first production, Mozart’s one-act opera The Impresario, at the York Street Theatre in Ottawa’s ByWard Market, Opera Lyra Ottawa is proud to be presenting two mainstage productions each year on the prestigious stage of the National Arts Centre’s Southam Hall.
Creative vision, tenacity, and strong support from its community in Canada’s Capital Region ensure that Opera Lyra Ottawa’s professionally staged operas are on par with Canada’s best.
